There's little doubt in my mind that the marauding thieves stole the work on account of it being an easy heist. Selfish greed only. But when considering the suffering being inflicted on the world as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, and with the somber tones of the painting being atypical for what people think of for Van Gogh, as well as Spring, the appropriateness is uncanny.
