Since traditional Japanese painters have mostly frowned upon symmetry in art, it amazes me to see how smoothly Hokusai manages to achieve a perfectly balanced composition in this piece by simply drawing the tree trunk diagonally all the way across the painting. The tree divides the surface into two halves. Since Mt Fuji is towards the left, the tree had to be in the middle. Perfect!! Thank you for sharing this.
